Direct Dyes Shade Card

Chemworld International is a direct dyes manufacturer and supplier serving industrial textile, paper, and leather markets across the United States and globally. Direct dyes also known as substantive dyes, are water-soluble anionic colorants that have a direct affinity for cellulosic fibers without requiring a mordant or fixative for basic application. They are applied from a hot aqueous bath with the addition of electrolytes (salt) to exhaust the dye onto cotton, viscose, linen, paper, and leather.

Our direct dye shade card includes over 35 shades - blacks, blues, greens, reds, oranges, violets, browns, and yellows covering all major application areas. Key grades include Direct Blue 86 (copper complex, excellent lightfastness), Direct Blue 199 (turquoise for specialty applications), Direct Red 81, and Direct Black 22 and 80.

FAQ

Both are used on cotton, but reactive dyes form a covalent chemical bond with the fiber for superior wash fastness, while direct dyes attach through hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals forces — giving good but not excellent wash fastness. Direct dyes are simpler to apply and more cost-effective for applications where premium wash fastness is not critical.

Direct dyes have very low affinity for synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. They are designed for cellulosic fibers (cotton, viscose, linen) and are not recommended for synthetic applications.

After dyeing, applying a cationic fixing agent (aftertreatment) significantly improves the wash fastness of direct dyes by forming an insoluble complex on the fiber surface. Metal complex direct dyes (like Direct Blue 86) also offer inherently better fastness than standard direct dyes.

Yes. Direct Blue 86 (a copper complex direct dye) produces a distinctive bright turquoise shade with good lightfastness. It is a popular choice for cotton fabric dyeing, paper coloring, and specialty applications. It is in regular stock.

Not all direct dyes are approved for food-contact paper. Please contact our team with the specific regulatory requirements for your application (FDA, EU, etc.) and we will identify the appropriate options.

We supply direct dyes in sample quantities for evaluation, kilogram quantities for small production runs, and full drum quantities for commercial production. Contact us for volume pricing and lead times.
